Tech From the Heart: A Tech Refresh Can Touch a Community

And they were not exaggerating! Many of the clinic’s devices still ran on Windows Vista, costing clinicians an estimated 25% in productivity while waiting for computers to boot, if they worked at all. Simple things like collaboratively documenting patient notes or allowing a patient to sign treatment plans on signature pads have been a daily frustration for the RVCC staff.
Even more frustrating were telehealth sessions — a necessity over the past two years: “We're talking about trauma with a client, and if my connection is freezing or I can’t log on at all, it really invalidates their experience in therapy because a very sensitive moment becomes disrupted,” says Miller.
Lots of businesses overlook the extra costs of running on outdated equipment, and RVCC was feeling the crunch. “When I joined River Valley, the counseling center was just trying to make ends meet in many instances,” says Leonard Smith, IT manager. “A lot of times, everything was just Band-Aided. If something wasn’t working, it was just throw more RAM in or maybe buy a refurbished computer.”
But the days of making ends meet with sub-par equipment are over for RVCC! In partnership with Intel, we’re helping RVCC as one of the $50,000 winners of our Connected Workplace Makeover Contest. RVCC is now providing clinic staff with 40 new desktops and 10 new laptops powered by the 11th Gen Intel Core Processor, plus new widescreen monitors, improving their efficiency and their patients’ experiences.
While we can’t give all businesses the makeovers they so desperately deserve, this is one case where lending a hand can make a lasting impact and help an entire community.
