A healthcare organization needed to modernize its on-premises data warehouse solution that was approaching end of service. The existing platform also lacked the compute power to support queries from the company’s 800+ analysts and data scientists. And, IT struggled to calculate appropriate business unit usage chargebacks on the current system.
These challenges led to inefficiencies across the organization. Data query limitations were set by IT, which forced end users to divide requests into multiple parts. And, departments lacked the visibility to control budgets.
Azure Synapse was identified to run in parallel with the legacy Netezza data warehouse instance and support scale. The healthcare organization partnered with Insight to refactor and migrate 14 databases and 800+ users to the cloud and maintain the legacy database with minimal interruption.
We implemented a hub and spoke model for the client, leveraging Databricks Delta Lake as the data hub and Synapse SQL Pools as the spokes. Requested data is now easily published from the Delta Lake to the SQL Pools, which allows each business unit to deploy and pay for its own pools as necessary.
With Databricks and Synapse SQL Pools in place, the company can easily meet service-level agreements and charge each business unit for their own SQL Pool scaled to meet their needs. The result is a highly flexible solution that improves performance and simplifies IT budgeting.
