Compared with the Windows XP transition, the migration from Server 2003 may be more laborious and complicated for solution providers. Adding to the challenges, customers' attitudes remain mixed -- despite Microsoft's looming deadline. It's like déjà vu all over again: Just as companies grappled with the end of Windows XP, the July 14 end-of-life date for all versions of Windows Server 2003 is approaching. With an estimated 20 million Server 2003 machines still in use and no word from Microsoft on whether it will offer extended support, solution providers have no small task ahead of them as they prep customers for a transition.

Solution providers rode this year's wave of Windows XP support termination to sales growth of as much as 40 percent. With an even larger wave -- the end of support for Windows Server 2003 -- set to crest in nine months, MSPs and VARs have already begun rolling out educational, marketing and deployment programs to fully capitalize on the transition. Despite years of lead-time, many businesses had to scramble this year when Microsoft ended support for its incredibly popular Windows XP desktop operating system. The disruption caused by the end of support for Windows XP may be nothing compared with the disruption caused by the end of support for Windows Server 2003, slated for July 14, 2015. "When Microsoft ended support for Windows XP in April, about one quarter of U.S. businesses were still using the operating system, which caused a series of operational issues and potential security challenges," says David Mayer, practice director, Microsoft Solutions, at IT services firm Insight Enterprises.

Microsoft's ending of support for Windows Server 2003 will be more time consuming and more complex than the end of support for Windows XP, according to Insight. The end of support for the product could potentially impact 24 million servers running in small and large businesses and has a greater reach than the end of support for Windows XP because it affects more than just desktops, David Mayer, practice director for Microsoft solutions for Insight Enterprises said.

Microsoft officially ends support for Windows Server 2003 on July 14, 2015. The deadline has some of the same ramifications that the Windows XP deadline had: Microsoft will no longer patch Windows Server 2003 for new security vulnerabilities. Presumably, Microsoft will offer expensive Custom Support Agreements for enterprises to continue getting patch support after that date, but there's been no official announcement yet. In the meantime, new security vulnerabilities keep cropping up for the aging OS. During the last full year, 2013, Microsoft released 37 critical updates for Windows Server 2003.

Windows Server 2003 expiration could present more business risk than the end of support for XP did, it is claimed. With Microsoft's support for the server set to expire in July 2015, businesses have less than a year to prepare for a migration more time consuming and complex than transitioning off the XP operating system was this April, according to an IT services firm and analyst. Insight's David Mayer, practice director for Microsoft solutions, warned that Server 2003 end-of-life would affect 24 million servers used by large and small businesses.
